Climate friendly solution. Rural Sustainable Development Centre’s building – a challenging issue

“We would like to raise the attention of those who want to invest in a sustainable way in a new building.” When it was decided to build the Centre’s wooden construction, it was not known the designers will go on over-sizing the wood boiler, and will not be taking into account an efficient thermal insulation.

The project, in terms of environmental sustainable development, has risen the awareness of the general public and of local and central authorities on the climate change in four communities, focusing on concrete actions leading to the mitigation of GHG emissions.
The objective is to create a model of participative local planning, decision-making and project management of the Rural Sustainable Development Centre in the mountin village of Brusturoasa, and replicate the model in 5 other Romanina villages.

The building is designed in the spirit of local architecture. It is built by local workers and the materials are also local and respects the energy-efficiency requirements. It is equipped as an area for training and demonstration on sustainable energy.  It’s a place where people from rural area can learn how to save energy and how to use appropriate technologies mainly based on using renewable energy sources to improve their life.

Chalanges encountered so far:
• the centre will not work full time, day and night (intermittent use of the heating system during winter time) – freezing hazard. (This winter in Brusturoasa were 2 periods of two weeks with -30°C continuously during the nights)
• it is difficult and expensive to find environmentally friendly insulation materials in Romania
• roof of the building has a very large surface to be insulated
• the fire wood is low quality fuel
• the equipment for burning saw dust pellets are extremely rare in Romania
• few resellers are able to give the right and appropriate information about the heating devices they are selling.

Progress made related to the heating system and insulation:
•35 kW wood burningboiler without gasification, was installled
•heating system includes a tank-in-tank device of 800 l, and the 6 flat solar collectors built localy
•insulation work for the flooring is undergoing
•preparing the drawings/posters for the heating system presentation to visitors
